A copyright is the term used to describe the intellectual property rights of a creator over their literary or artistic works. Such works can include written works, music, paintings, sculpture, movies, and even more modern works such as computer programs, advertisements, and technical drawings.

The owner of these rights is granted the exclusive right to determine who can record, reproduce, translate, adapt, perform and broadcast their works. In Malaysia, copyright is granted to the originator of the work as long as the following three conditions are satisfied:

Sufficient effort has been expended to make the work original in character

The work has been written down, recorded or reduced to a material form

The author is a qualified person, or the work is either made or first published in Malaysia

According to the Berne Convention, in most countries no action is required to register the rights for such works. However, voluntary registration of such works can immeasurably help to resolve any disputes and facilitate transactions. In Malaysia, the MyIPO system enables authors, artists and creators to be endorsed as the originator of their works since June 2012.
