Patent

A patent refers to exclusive intellectual property rights over a technical invention or innovation, and having a patent prevents others from using the invention for a limited period, usually 20 years. The laws governing patents are designed as a balance between encouraging innovation while also keeping the good of the public in mind.

The person or organization with the patent then has the right to commercialize the invention. This means he has the right to use and produce the invention himself, or determine who has the right to do so. However, to assert this right, the patent holder must file all the necessary information about the invention with the patent office, and effectively disclose the detailed workings of the invention to the public at large.

The owner of the IP has to keep in mind that patents only accord territorial rights and only protect the owner in countries or regions in which the patent has been filed. Also, while this protects your interests in areas where IP protection is strictly enforced, it obviously exposes you to some risk in areas where IP protection enforcement is very lax.
